BC Lions sign four players

The British Columbia Lions have signed four players to strengthen both O and D lines, and a wide receiver to add some punch to the offense. The moves were made to further the hopes of the team to secure a second straight Grey Cup championship.

For those of us in the States, and those of us looking at what kind of player end up playing in the CFL, these signings offer great insight as to the pool of players that play up north.

DL Brandon Jordan comes to the Lions after playing one year in the CFL, and going to school at Illinois. He is an OL convert, but his scouting report reads pretty well, and rates him high in power and strength as well as tenacity and aggressiveness. Those are skills that should serve him well on the defensive side of the ball.

OL Bradley Shedd also joins the Lions after playing his college ball at Idaho State. At six foot seven and 280 pounds he is a massive tackle that played 10 games in 2010 with the Bengals. He lettered in football and baseball in High School.

Jordan Mudge joins Shedd on the Lions O line. He competed for a starting job with the Wolf pack in 2011, and was on the all conference team at his junior college. Officially these three players are listed as imports to the CFL.

The Lions also signed Canadian WR Keith Godding. He has seen CFL action as a member of the Montreal Alouettes practice squad and last year with the Toronto Argonauts, and is a graduate of Bishop’s.

How much actual impact any of these players make is still to be seen, but for new comers to the CFL it is interesting to look at how CFL teams are constructed, and the pool of players the eight team league draws from.
