Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Seattle Seahawks

Reason for Optimism

This a team that has made back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and are armed with arguably the best quarterback, running back, tight end, middle linebacker and secondary in the game.  There’s shouldn’t be anything other than optimism in the pacific northwest.

Cause for Concern

The offensive line. That’s the biggest question mark heading into 2015.  Seattle has to get that solved right away, otherwise it could be a problem.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Seattle Seahawks

1. Core Stays Strong – Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and Legion of Boom. That’s the core of this football team and if they do what they’ve always done, and a little bit more, they’ll be just fine.

2. Jimmy Graham Brings Some Gumbo – They went out and traded for Graham and expect him to have a huge impact in their passing game.  If history is of any indication, he’ll add some flavor and production to the Seahawks passing game.

3. Offensive Line Is a Strength – If the ’cause for concern’ can become a ‘reason for optimism’, especially early in the season, Seattle could find themselves playing in 3 straight Super Bowls.

Reason for Optimism

The Rams have a strong defense at every level, the ability to get after the quarterback coupled with ball-hawks in the secondary.  You toss in the fact that their backfield could be potentially the best in the division along with stellar special teams play and you can see the optimism; especially if all you need is for your quarterback to not be a liability.

Cause for Concern

If the offensive line can’t gel and stick together for a 16 game season, it’ll effect the play of Nick Foles, which would ultimately have the Rams in the same position they’ve been in the past 3 seasons.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the St. Louis Rams

1. Offensive Line Becomes One – The cohesiveness of this unit from Week 1 through Week 16 is integral to team success. They have the skill positions to get it done, they just need this unit to follow suit.

2. Nick Foles Plays Good Football – Notice I said ‘good’ not ‘great’.  I think if Nick Foles can be who he’s been the past 2 seasons in Philadelphia, the Rams will be more than capable to win games with their offense.

3. Defense Must Remain Dominant – This has to be the one constant for this team week to week.  St. Louis has arguably the best defensive line in football and if they’re able to cause havoc each game, they’ll be in position to give their offense — which should be a ball control emphasis — more opportunities with the ball; which ultimately means more wins.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: San Francisco 49ers

Reason for Optimism

Continuity with the coaching staff is huge in football and the 49ers promoting Jim Tomsula to Head Coach was huge.  This team is still strong defensively and should have a very good running game, so you can understand why there’s still some optimism in San Francisco.

Cause for Concern

This is a team in transition and they’re still some questions to be answered along the offensive line and on the flanks.  Those are where I see the biggest areas of concern for this football team.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the San Francisco 49ers

1. Defense Remains Dominant – If this 49ers defense can get the projected production from its young players at every level, they’ll still be one of the tougher defenses in the league.

2. 3rd WR Emerges – This, in my opinion, is the key to unlocking the 49ers offense as a whole.  If one of the many options on the inside can stand out and take pressure off of Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith, it’ll make the offense tougher to defend.

3. Offensive Line Becomes an Asset – Again, there’s two, maybe three stalwarts up front for San Francisco.  What has to happen is the RG/RT and depth situation has to shake itself out.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Arizona Cardinals

Reason for Optimism

The Cardinals were really good last year prior to Carson Palmer going down for the year.  They still ended up with an 11-5 record and in the playoffs.  Palmer returns, the defense added talent and the same core talent is still in tact.

Cause for Concern

Can Carson Palmer overcome yet another ACL injury?  It’s not necessarily the physical side of it more so than it’s the mental aspect of it.  Also, yes they’ve brought in a ton of new and talented players at the 2nd level but will it be enough and can they gel quickly to be a threat?

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Arizona Cardinals

1. Offensive Line Stays In Tact – They’re good up front, but if guys like Mike Iupati and Jonathan Cooper can stay healthy for a good portion of the season, then they’ll be really good offensively.

2. Pass Rush Comes to Life – Potential will get you beat, however, it can also help get you over the hump.  The Cardinals have the potential and if it realizes itself, this defense could put up serious numbers.

3. Running Game Explodes – Andre Ellington is a game-breaker. So is Chris Johnson. Like I mentioned in the video, they’re really deep at the position and if the ground game can take pressure off the passing game, the offense will be very tough to defend.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: San Diego Chargers

Reason for Optimism

This team is solid in all three facets: Offense, Defense and Special Teams.  They’ve also added the missing link, I believe, in Melvin Gordon.  Being solid in every area is more than enough to give any team optimism heading into the season.

Cause for Concern

If San Diego struggles at the 2nd level from a run stopping and pass rushing perspective, they’ll find themselves losing a lot of close games.  That’s their biggest area for improvement this year.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the San Diego Chargers

1. Gordon Doesn’t Hit Rookie Wall – If ‘Flash’ Gordon can give the Bolts offense what he gave to the Badgers offensive attack in college, Philip Rivers will have the luxury of operating off of play action and their offense could be extremely dangerous to stop.

2. Melvin Ingram & Jason Verrett Go the Distance – These two players are difference makers and if they’re able to stay healthy for a full season, watch out.

3. Offensive Line Strengthens – There were some slight questions about the right side of the offensive line and if the Chargers figure out the Fluker/Troutman/Barksdale combo, the offense won’t sputter one bit.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Oakland Raiders

Reason for Optimism

The Raiders have drafted well the last 3 seasons and it’s evident by the amount of young talent on this roster.  This team wasn’t as bad as their record indicated last year and with improvements made at Wide Receiver and on the defensive side of the ball, you can definitely understand why there’s optimism.

Cause for Concern

You still have a worry about the secondary because of the possibility of injury.  I think the Raiders can’t afford any injuries at corner or with Derek Carr if they want to have a shot at the playoffs.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Oakland Raiders

1. Latavius Murray Goes Over 1,000 – This is probably the best way for the Raiders to be successful right out of the gate.  If their run game is strong, their play-action game will be even stronger.  If Murray is able to do what his talent suggests, the Raiders will be fine.

2. Takeaways Increase – This was a spot where the Raiders defense struggled last season.  They just couldn’t take the ball away.  They don’t have to be the best, but they can’t be what they were last year; any improvement is a great thing.

3. Passing Game Matures – With the additions of Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper, 2nd year QB Derek Carr has no reason to not make huge strides in his game.  If the Raiders are able to be a threat on both ends of offense, they’ll be on their way.
