Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: New Orleans Saints

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Saints offense will always put up points and be dangerous.  Now you add another explosive talent in CJ Spiller and a rededication to the run game, it makes it even more exciting.  Defensively, with the pieces they’ve added in free agency and in the draft, you can understand the optimism.

Cause for Concern

The biggest cause for concern would be if they struggle to stop the run because either inconsistent play or lack of depth on the inside and if the offensive line, despite the new parts, still struggles to protect and move opponents off the spot.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New Orleans Saints

1. Drew Brees Stays Healthy – Truth be told, this is the only player on the Saints roster that they can’t afford to lose.  The depth behind Brees isn’t even serviceable to put it bluntly.

2. Defensive Takeaways Increase – The Saints were -13 in the turnover differential last season.  If the additions made at the 2nd and 3rd level of the defense pays immediate dividends, then that means more opportunities for an explosive to take the field.

3. Payton Remembers 2006 & 2009 – Run Game, Run Game, Run Game.  Now armed with their best backfield since the ’06 & ’09 seasons, Sean Payton can’t continue to get pass happy in games.  If the Saints play with great offensive balance, they’ll win a ton of games and could find themselves marching right on into Santa Clara.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Carolina Panthers

Reason for Optimism

A strong defensive team that got better in the draft and QB Cam Newton is healthy as he gets the chance to develop even more chemistry with his wide receivers. Both of which could land the Panthers in the playoffs yet again, so you can understand the optimism.

Cause for the Concern

The offensive line was a big problem last year and you hope that the additions the Panthers made during the offseason, albeit small, are enough to not repeat itself in 2015.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Carolina Panthers

1. Offensive Line is Stable – The Panthers are a run-first team, but had issues not only running the ball, but also in the pass protection department.  If the offensive line is able to stabilize, in particularly on the edges, then the offense should be able to be consistent game after game.

2. Superman Flies – Cam Newton has played brilliantly considering the situations surrounding him in the passing game.  If the trio of Benjamin and Olsen can build on their excellent 2014 season, and rookie Devin Funchess can get caught up pretty quick, then Newton will have his best season as a pro which could help the Panthers go to Santa Clara.

3. Defense Stays Dominant – This group was a problem for opposing offenses last year, especially within the front 7.  If the secondary gets even better this year, look out NFC.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Atlanta Falcons

Reason for Optimism

New Coach, new attitude and a defense that looks to be strong at every level.  The Atlanta Falcons under Dan Quinn will be tougher, more physical and should be exciting to watch.  Oh by the way, their passing game is nothing to sneeze at either, so you can understand the optimism in Atlanta.

Cause for Concern

The offensive line, it’s health, growth and productivity could either make the season or break the season.  If this unit does well, for a full season, the Falcons will do just fine.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Atlanta Falcons

1. Run Game Flourishes – If the Falcons are able to get a ground game going, develop the balance within their offense, they’ll be tough to beat.

2. Defense becomes Dominant – They have the pieces to get it done.  I think they’re really strong within the front 7 and have guys that can pick off passes on the back end.  This Falcons defense could be Top 10 by season’s end.

3. Treat Opponent the Same Way – The Falcons have to make sure to treat every game like the Super Bowl and not get relaxed verses a struggling team.  That’s the difference in what kept Atlanta out of the playoffs last year and helped Carolina get in.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Tennessee Titans

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Titans finally got themselves a QB that has both the passing skills and running skills that they’ve lacked since Vince Young.  Having that threat back there at QB should make everyone better offensively.  A better offense means that the defense won’t be on the field as much. They’ve bolstered the offensive and the coaching staff by bringing in Dick Lebeau, so you can see why there’s a lot to optimistic about in Tennessee.

Cause for Concern

The Titans really don’t have a ‘game breaker’ at running back, other than Dexter McCluster but he’ll primarily be utilized situationally.  They are also very thing at edge rusher.  They can’t afford any injuries at either position.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Tennessee Titans

1. Mariota Provides Stability – If the reigning Heisman Trophy winner is able to help bring balance to the offense and continuously get better every week, the Titans will win their fair share of game.

2. Horton & LeBeau’s Gumbo – If two the greatest football minds and their aggressive style are able to coexist and create something that’s feared within the division most importantly, then Tennessee could be very strong in 2 aspects of a game: Defense & Special Teams.

3. Running Game Awakens – Either Bishop Sankey or rookie David Cobb has to step up and put up at least 1200 yards in order for things to really take off in the Music City.

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Jags have revamped their offensive line and quietly, there’s a nice group of athletic and talented receivers, tight ends and running backs on the roster.  The expected growth of 2nd year quarterback Blake Bortles could make the Jaguars formidable; which definitely brings optimism to Duval.

Cause for Concern

The overall lack of depth defensively is the biggest concern going into the 2015 season.  Jacksonville can’t afford any injuries at the 1st and 2nd level of their defense otherwise it could be a problem.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Jacksonville Jaguars

1. Bortles Graduates – If Blake Bortles becomes better with his decision-making, more consistent with his mechanics and a better protector of the football, there’s more than enough talent offensively for Jacksonville to put up a lot of points.

2. Defense Gets Better Each Week – Like I mentioned before, the Jags are thin depth-wise defensively within the front 7.  If they can avoid injury and reserve guys step up, seize the opportunity and play well, then there’s no doubt in my mind that with the tutelage of Gus Bradley, they’ll be tough to move the ball against.

3. Special Teams Become Special – It’s about winning 2/3 facets of a football game and for a young team like Jacksonville, you want 1 of those facets to be special teams. From punting to the return game, the Jaguars have to make sure their special teams is the most consistent unit week-to-week. Offense or defense may struggle week-to-week depending on the opponent, but if your special teams are consistent, it helps pick up the slack in other areas.

FBGP’s 2016 Prospect Preview: DT Andrew Billings, Baylor

A lot of attention is being paid to Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman. There is no doubt that his play has allowed him to be mentioned as one of the better defensive players. Oakman is a quite a prospect himself, but there is another player on Baylor’s defensive line that brings it also. Defensive tackle Andrew Billings anchors the middle of the defensive line. He faces constant double teams and still makes plays. The plays don’t always show up in the stat book but those who watch film closely will see that plenty of the plays that other Baylor defenders make are because of how Billings occupies two gaps or pushes the pocket into the quarterback’s lap.

Billings is a preseason All American candidate. The junior has appeared on both the Chuck Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski Award watch list. Both awards honor the best college defensive player in the nation.  The videos below are examples of why Billings is more than worthy of these awards.

Teams will try to design cutback lanes for running backs. West Virginia relied on their center to make an angle block on Billings which is supposed to open up a cutback lane. Billings gets off the ball quickly and gets his hands on the center first. He sees where the running back is trying to go and sheds the center’s block to make the tackle as the runner tries to cut back.

Premier players make others around them better. Teams run a lot of two gapping defensive schemes up front. This requires a defensive tackle that can own a double team. The defensive tackle has to sacrifice himself to allow linebackers to attack the gaps on blitzes. Billings occupies the blockers and gives the blitzing linebacker a free lane to rush the quarterback.

This play is effort personified. That’s a 300 pound man running tracking down Trevone Boykin, one of the elite playmakers in college football. This is a good time to mention that Billings has been clocked at 4.94 seconds in the 40 yard dash.

One of the most effective ways to rattle a quarterback is to push the pocket back into his lap. The site of seeing one of their personal protectors getting walked back into their private space sickens quarterbacks. At times, they may short arm a throw or not step into the throw fearing that they can bang their hand on the backpedaling lineman’s helmet as they follow through. That can cause them to lose velocity. In this case, if the outside blitzer could flatten out, he would get the easy sack as the quarterback tried to flee.

Defenses have gotten more sophisticated. Coaches rely on players to fulfill roles that they traditionally are not required to. An athlete like Billings can move in space despite his size. Here he drops back into coverage and actually takes away the quarterback’s first read, the wide receiver on the slant route. There isn’t much not to like about Billings. He gives everything he has on every snap. Billings can rush the passer and is dominant against the run. He will draw double teams most of the time but when he doesn’t, it often leads to a loss of yards for the offense. Billings definitely has the nasty streak that most top defenders possess:

Football Gameplan’s 2015 NFL Team Preview: Indianapolis Colts

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Colts made it to the AFC Championship last season and have improved in the areas that needed improvement.  There’s talent well-stocked throughout the roster and armed with a revamped run game, there is a lot of reason for optimism in Indy.

Cause for Concern

The main concern would be if, even with the new additions to the run game, the Colts remain a pass happy team.  Balance will help get them over the hump.  The other concern would be if the offensive line can’t find its stability with the reshuffling.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Indianapolis Colts

1. Running Game Flourishes – This has been an evident missing piece for this Colts football team for 3 seasons.  With Frank Gore and others in the fold, it doesn’t look that way anymore…at least for this season.

2. Young Defenders Mature – If guys like Bjoern Werner, Jonathan Newsome, Josh Chapman and others are able to build on the success they had at the end of 2014, the Colts will have a vicious defensive rotation with a ton of depth.

3. Staying Multiple – The good part about the Colts offensive weapons is that they’re able to play any style of game: Up Tempo, Spread, Power, West Coast.  That multiplicity creates all sorts of problems for a defense which could help get them ultimately where they want to be.
