The spread offense has been a major part of college football and it is now becoming a featured scheme in the NFL. Because of that, numerous multi-threat players are getting more opportunities to display their ability to impact the game in many ways. The slot receiver has become a major weapon. The next prospect to be featured in our spotlight series is one of the best slot receivers in the country.
Pharoh Cooper has all of the traits of a slot receiver. He played running back, receiver and quarterback in high school. Head coach Steve Spurrier has taken advantage of Cooper’s versatility. Cooper can affect the game by taking a handoff in the backfield, working a defensive back from the slot position and by throwing the ball from the wildcat formation. He has a couple of passing touchdowns on his resume. He is a defensive coordinator’s nightmare. Let’s take a look at some of the things that make him such a big time playmaker.

Here you see Cooper taking a shovel pass and breaking off a nice gain:

His ability to tote the rock is on display here. Notice how he breaks three tackles on his way to what ends up being almost a 20 yard run. Cooper is built like a running back and carries the football like one also. Playing the slot requires the ability to make plays across the middle of the field. Sometimes there will be linebackers waiting to lay a big hit but when there is a running lane, a true playmaker will turn a short catch into a long gain.
The middle of the field is wide open. Cooper is matched up against a defensive back that he catches flatfooted. He releases off the ball slightly to the outside and makes a hard cut inside to create a huge window for the quarterback to deliver him the ball. The throw hits him in stride and Cooper is off to the races.
Slot receivers will also have to make plays outside of the numbers. Defending the slot position is one of the hardest things for a defensive back to do because there is ample space for the receiver to go inside or outside. The defensive back doesn’t have the privilege of using the sideline to his favor throughout the route against a receiver in the slot. Many think of slot guys as only making plays in the middle of the field. The better ones will make plays outside also.

Cooper battles through the contact from the corner and makes a diving catch that puts his team in scoring position. That is the kind of effort that will inspire a quarterback to throw the ball even when the receiver is covered because he trusts that his guy will make the play.

Here is another example of how Cooper shows that he can make plays on the perimeter.

Cooper again fights through contact when the corner tries to get his hands on him to slow him down. The quarterback places the ball perfectly into the end zone. Notice how he trusts his receiver to make a play. Again, that trust is earned. Cooper is able to track the ball and make the catch at the highest point. To top it off, he has the athleticism to get his foot down to complete the play.
In my opinion, Pharoh Cooper is the best slot receiver in the nation. He definitely has the chance to be a playmaker at the next level after his college career. Playing for a creative offensive mind like Steve Spurrier has given Cooper the chance to show how he can do it all on the offensive side of the ball. Just a side note, he also played some defensive back in high school. South Carolina actually recruited him as a DB but he was converted to receiver during his freshman year.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Miami Dolphins

Reason for Optimism

The Dolphins have drafted extremely well over the last 3 seasons and have quietly assembled a very talented team.  They’ve been on the cusp of the playoffs the last 3 years as well.  By consistently adding talent to the roster, eventually they’ll kick the playoff door in.  This could be the year, so you can definitely understand the optimism.  I think them being strong on both sides on the line of scrimmage, in my opinion, feeds into that optimism.  This is a very talented squad.

Cause for Concern

Obviously the health of Branden Albert is one.  You want one of your premier players to be 100% and ready to go Week 1.  If he can’t, it’s not detrimental, but it does hurt.  Also, Ryan Tannehill has to do his part to help the offense grow.  That involves not sacking himself and being better situationally.  If those things don’t happen, they could find themselves once again hovering around the .500 mark.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Dolphins

1. Play UP to EVERY opponent – The last 3 seasons, the Dolphins have made a habit of playing up or down to the opponent.  That’s a big reason why they couldn’t close out games and win those ‘must-win’ games in order to get into the playoffs.

2. Defense ‘wants to’ stop the run – Remember, stopping the run is about attitude and ‘want to’.  Now that they’ve added NDamukong Suh amongst others, they have the attitude but is the ‘want to’ there.  If they can get better verses the run, they’ll be a Top 10 defense easily.

3. The Growth of Ryan Tannehill & Caleb Sturgis – Both guys have the ability to contribute points to the team and the last time I checked, you need points to win.  If both guys take the necessary strides to be on the plus side of that equation, the Dolphins could contend for the AFC East crown.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Buffalo Bills

Reason for Optimism

The Bills landed a really good Head Coach in Rex Ryan. He inherits one of the best defenses in the NFL.  That’s a match made in heaven. You toss in the addition of a legit game breaker at RB in LeSean McCoy along with a very potent WR and TE group, and you can see why there’s optimism in Buffalo.  Lets not forget this team went 9-7 last year, so they are extremely talented.

Cause for Concern

Looking at Rex Ryan’s track record with how he manages the QB position, you have to wonder if he will stick with a guy for a full season or try to play multiple guys.  If he does the latter, then that’s a recipe for disaster.  The interior offensive line could potentially derail things if they can’t gel by Week 1.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Bills

1. Start EJ Manuel and stick with him for the full season – Trust me, he’ll get better every week

2. Continue playing Rex Ryan AND Buffalo Bills defense – It’s scary to think how good this defense will be under Ryan.

3. Close out and finish games – This is huge for any football team, but I felt as though Buffalo could’ve won 11 games last season if they were able to close out opponents.

4. Staying Balanced Offensively – The Bills have more than enough talent at the skill positions to cause problems for any defense.  McCoy is great…but don’t make yourself one-dimensional because of it.

2016 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: Virginia Tech CB Kendall Fuller

2016 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: Virginia Tech CB Kendall Fuller

______

As the 2015 college football season approaches, we will take a look at some of the top prospects across the nation. Kendall Fuller is the latest member of the Fuller family to be among the better players in college football. He follows the footsteps of his older brother Kyle Fuller who was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2014 NFL Draft. There are a number of similarities between the two brothers.
Fuller has the full arsenal of tools that make up a top tier corner. When watching him play, three in particular stand out. The first thing that Fuller exhibits is superb footwork. This is something that helps him to recover in the rare moment that he is caught out of position. The footwork that he exhibits along with his patience forces the wide receiver to declare his route.
A lot of defensive backs are quick to fall for the moves that a receiver makes at the release. That’s not the case for Fuller.

Here we see the footwork and patience in action:

Fuller is very relaxed and simply goes where the receiver takes him. He doesn’t fall for the hard move insider and turns to run with him with ease. Notice how he is able to change direction without any hesitation. Another trait that Fuller has is how well he understands where he is on the football field. He is very much aware of how to use the sideline to his advantage and how to make the receiver’s route more difficult to execute.

The next video shows Fuller’s footwork once again.

This time he uses his hands to redirect the receiver to the outside. Fuller then cuts off the receiver’s route and reduces the space for the quarterback to drop the ball into along the sideline by simply running with the receiver but on an angle towards the sideline.
Fuller is a complete corner not only because of his ability to cover. He is a presence against the run and does an outstanding job of making tackles in the open field.

The play is designed to entice Fuller to abandon the running back on the swing pattern and instead run with the receiver on the slant. Fuller sees the swing route and takes the running back down for a loss on 3rd and 3. If Fuller doesn’t make that tackle, the running back gets the first down and more.

Kendall Fuller is as sound of a corner as you will see in college football. He has top level athleticism and possesses a thorough understanding of the position.
