FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Cincinnati Bengals

Reason for Optimism

The Bengals have been a model of consistency over the last 4 years in the AFC; really the entire time under Head Coach Marvin Lewis.  The are armed with a strong running game and are getting some key players back healthy on the defensive side which should once again make them a factor in the AFC North.

Cause for Concern

The biggest area of concern would be if the Bengals aren’t able to apply pressure and if they decide to continue to average 32 pass attempts per game.  Those two go hand-in-hand into what could potentially keep the Bengals out of the playoffs this year.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Cincinnati Bengals

1. Balance Out the Offense – Like I mentioned in the video, if they follow the Dallas Cowboys blueprint of running more, throwing less and in more manageable situations, then the Bengals will tough to get off the field offensively.

2. Second Level Defense Stays Healthy – Cincinnati has some good linebackers.  Vontaze Burfict being the leader of that group.  If they don’t miss time, they will be a much better defense without question.

3. Everyone Does Their Job – This is mainly for the offense, on the flanks and at tight end in particular.  Everyone has to do their part to attract attention away from each other.  Basically, force a defense to tip their hands coverage-wise and make the plays that are their to be made when you’re number is called.  The potential is there, it’s time to realize it.

Reason for Optimism

The Ravens have the ability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.  They have a proven quarterback that has performed great in the playoffs and they’ve added talent at wide receiver, tight end and in the secondary; so this is a team that is built to make a run this year in the AFC.

Cause for Concern

In my honest opinion, I still view the Ravens running game as ‘ordinary’.  There isn’t a true ‘threat’ in the backfield and I feel like that could be a potential pitfall for this team.  You also have to worry about guys like Webb and Elam in the secondary.  They need both to play up to par.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Baltimore Ravens

1. Young Wide Receivers Play Like Vets – They need to be able to take the pressure off of Steve Smith Sr.  They can accomplish this a variety of ways, but it’ll still be depending on the youth at both wide receiver and tight end.

2. Justin Forsett Does It Again – How well can you sustain success is always the key.  But whether it’s Forsett or a combination of Rookie Buck Allen and Lorenzo Taliaferro, the Ravens can’t be one-dimensional and win.

3. Defense Stays Dominant Without Ngata – Lets be honest, that’s the big elephant in the room.  Yes Haloti Ngata wasn’t “Haloti Ngata” last season, but he’s still Haloti Ngata.  If Timmy Jernigan and Carl Davis can make that type of impact up front, then the Ravens will be just fine.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Washington Redskins

Reason for Optimism

The Redskins have quietly beefed up on both sides of the line of scrimmage. And in my honest opinion, they have a pretty talented roster with some good depth.  RG3 enters this season healthy with a newfound purpose; so you can understand the optimism in the nation’s capital.

Cause for Concern

The biggest concern would be if Griffin III can’t stay healthy.  Period.  That puts a lot of pressure everywhere else on the football team.  Washington needs consistency at that position because it has curtailed success over the last 2 seasons.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Washington Redskins

1. ’12 Robert Griffin III Shows Up – RG3 was his best during his rookie season from a passing perspective.  If that element of his game returns — the precision, accurate and decisive passing, this team will go far.

2. Defense Elevates Their Game – Washington made a ton of moves defensively at every level.  If those guys, both rookies and free agents, gel with those that were already on the roster, the defense will be tough to move the ball against.

3. Offensive Line Flourishes – This was another point of emphasis for the front office.  Like I’ve mentioned in the video, they did a great job addressing this issue.  The only thing that’s left is to see if it plays out how they expect it to be on the field.

Reason for Optimism

The Eagles are solid across the board and have one of the best special teams units in the NFL.  When you add a strong defensive front seven and a good running game, you’re going to win more games than most; which always leads to having optimism.

Cause for Concern

The quarterback position and interior offensive line are the biggest concerns because they go hand-in-hand with what the Eagles have to do to win.  Sam Bradford has to stay healthy and if the interior offensive line outside of Jason Kelce struggles, it could derail the growth of the offense.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles

1. Quarterback Position is Consistent – If Sam Bradford is able to stay upright for a full season, I have no doubting his passing ability and his ability to play well within Chip Kelly’s scheme.

2. Defense Doesn’t Get Fatigued – We’ve seen this over the last 2 seasons with this football team.  Because they play at a high tempo, they tend to wear down late in games.  Many times during the season, the Eagles would be in control of a game only to let it slip away due to defensive fatigued.  If that doesn’t happen this year, and they’re able to get key stops, they’ll go far.

3. Offensive Line Doesn’t Become a Liability – See #1

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: New York Giants

Reason for Optimism

The Giants offense has 2 of the most dynamic options at receiver in Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham.  When you toss in the stable play of Eli Manning and an improved offensive line, you can understand the optimism offensively because they’ll have the opportunity to outscore teams.

Cause for Concern

The Giants still don’t have that ‘it’ factor defensively.  Getting Landon Collins was a big time move and instantly helps out the secondary, which I think will be solid. But the major concern is with the defensive front 7.  There’s still a lot of question marks there.  I also don’t think the running game is as dependable as you would need it to be in order to survive if the pass game is having an off day.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New York Giants

1. Offense is Firing on All Cylinders – A healthy Victor Cruz with Beckham, Randle and Donnell at TE is very tough to defend.  If that offensive line, especially the offensive tackles, are able to not be a liability, this offense will make a lot of noise.

2. Defensive Ends Bring It – There’s no shortage of capable, talented pass rushers, the consistency has to be there from game to game.  If they’re able to apply pressure, whether Jason Pierre-Paul is in the lineup or not, then that’s all they need to get it done

3. Special Teams Become Special – The most underrated acquisition in the NFC was the signing of KR/PR Dwayne Harris.  The impact of field position is going to be huge for the Giants.  They’re solid and dependable in the kicking department; add in a dynamic returner and they can come out and win 2/3 facets of a game each week.

2016 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: LB Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame

2016 Prospect Preview: LB Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame

More and more athletes are playing positions other than just the skill positions. Linebackers are required to take on 300 pound offensive linemen and still be able to carry a wide receiver down the seam or on a crossing route. Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith is one of the more impressive linebacker prospects in college football this season.

Smith anchored the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams while in high school. He also threw the shotput. Make no mistake, he is quite the athlete. The thing that is most impressive about Jaylon Smith is his lateral quickness and burst to the football. He is also powerful enough to blow up most lead blockers when they meet in any gap.
The best way to categorize Smith’s ability is to call him the total package. There isn’t much that he can’t do on the football field. Let’s take a look at some of the things that he does very well.

Here is a running play that is flowing to the opposite side of the field. The right tackle (71) is assigned to cutoff Smith on the backside of the play but Smith is too fast. Smith shows a great amount of quickness and makes the tackle behind the line of scrimmage for a loss.

Notice the burst to the ball carrier in this clip against Florida State.

Jaylon Smith is also outstanding when it comes to taking on blocks and still making the tackle. Notice how he makes the first punch against the offensive lineman. Smith gives up plenty of pounds to the lineman but takes him on and makes the tackle.

Defensive coordinators will take advantage of Smith’s athleticism by sending him on the blitz from the outside at times. He is an instinctive player. Here he does a very good job of recognizing what is happening. He times his jump and knocks the ball down, preventing a completion to the receiver in the flats.

Smith can also blitz the interior gaps with success. Here he is sent on a cross dog blitz and it is timed to perfection. Smith loops inside but hugs the outside hip of his fellow linebacker and has a free path to the quarterback. The result is a rushed throw and an incompletion in the red zone.

Running with a receiver is no real problem for Jaylon Smith. Here the receiver is running a crossing route and Smith stays with him stride for stride. The quarterback tries to squeeze it in to the receiver but Smith does a great job of getting himself in position to break up the pass with his left hand.

The above videos are only a few of the many that make Jaylon Smith one of the best linebacker prospects. He is capable of playing in either a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme and would be a Navarro Bowman like inside linebacker in an NFL 3-4 scheme.
