FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Dallas Cowboys

Reason for Optimism

The Cowboys are armed with the best offensive line and a ton of skilled weapons on the perimeter.  Tony Romo is coming off the best season of his career and the defense will get better as the season progress.  This time is hungry and wants to get the bitter taste out of their mouth from last year’s controversial playoff loss to Green Bay.  So with all things considered, you can see why optimism is high in Big D.

Cause for Concern

The running game is still a major concern for me.  The thought of ‘you can just put any back behind a good offensive line and be fine’ is furthest from the truth.  DcMarco Murray was a legit talent and the guys they have now or good players, but not the type you have to ‘game plan’ on stopping.  Plus they’re loaded with concerns being from health or consistency.  You also have to be concerned about playing without guys like Rolando McClain and Greg Hardy for a month.  If they can’t gel upon return, it’ll ultimately be a detriment to team success.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Dallas Cowboys

1. Withstand the First Month – Like I’ve mentioned before, if the Cowboys can hold it together defensively for the first 4 weeks of the season, as guys start to return from suspension and as rookies get acclimated in their roles, they’ll be dangerous from that point on.

2. Ground Game Gets It Together – Lets be honest, a lot of the success Dallas had last year offensively was due to the running of DeMarco Murray behind the best OL in the game.  If the collection of backs on the roster can do a fine job with the committee approach, ala the New England Patriots, then this offense won’t miss a beat.

3. Key Players Staying Healthy – I think the 2 guys that the Cowboys can’t do without this season are Tony Romo and Sean Lee.  if both guys are out there for 16 games, look out!

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: New York Jets

Reason for Optimism

The Jets should have one of the best defensive squads in the NFL. They’re armed with a very talented defensive line and ball-hawking secondary.  Offensively, new Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey and Geno Smith should mesh well together as the Jets finally have given Smith some really good options on the flanks.  So with a strong defensive team, an excellent defensive mind in Head Coach Todd Bowles, and a creative offensive mind in Gailey, you can understand the optimism coming out of Florham Park.

Cause for Concern

The Jets still have a weakness at Running Back.  I don’t feel as though there’s a ‘threat’ back there which could ultimately lead to a sputtering attack.  The right side of the offensive line could also be a concern if some of the same problems of 2014 start to resurface.  And the biggest issue defensively would be if the second level (Linebackers) are not able to consistently bring it from the outside and generate pressure.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New York Jets

1. Offense’s Flight Doesn’t Delay – If the Jets are having success offensively from the start of the season, that only bodes well for their chances of making the playoffs.  Their offense doesn’t have to be ‘great’, but it can’t be a detriment to team success.

2. Geno Smith’s Turnovers Disappear – If Geno Smith can cut his fumbles and interceptions in half, then the offense will be able to sustain drives a lot more in 2015.  Which ultimately means the defense can stay fresh and active throughout the course of a game and season.

3. The New York Sack Exchange Merges with The No-Fly Zone – In football, the front end has to help out the back end.  If the talented defensive line can create problems, get to the quarterback and force bad passes and the ball-hawking secondary does a great job of playing clean up, picking off passes in the process, then the Jets could lead the league in sacks and takeaways which could put them in the playoffs this year.

Reason for Optimism

The Pats are one of the most well-coached teams in the NFL.  They do a great job of game planning and scheming, both of which will keep you in and help you win a lot of games.  Also, they just so happen to have one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history in Tom Brady.  They’re a team that is used to playing with a constant shuffling of the deck, so even with the possibility of Brady missing a few games, they still have optimism.  Plus, defensively, they’ve improved their defensive line, which should help out the 2nd and 3rd levels.

Cause for Concern

If they can’t overcome the lack of depth at linebacker and at cornerback, things could get dicey for the Patriots.  Across the division, teams have the capability to go with 3 and 4 WR sets and be strong. Can they match up?

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New England Patriots

1. Garoppolo is Able to Keep the Ship Afloat – The Patriots drafted him for a reason.  They believe he’s the future and he’ll get a great test very early.  If he can go either .500 or 3-1 in the first 4 games, that’s huge.

2. Jerod Mayo Plays a Full Season – His availability means a lot for this defense. If he’s out there all 16 games, this could be a dangerous front 7.

3. Cornerback Play Steps Up to the Challenge – Losing both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner is a big blow.  If Logan Ryan & Malcolm Butler provide strong play along with one of many at Nickel, then the Pats could find themselves playing deep in January.

2016 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: WR Pharoh Cooper, South Carolina

2016 NFL Draft Prospect Preview: WR Pharoh Cooper, South Carolina Gamecocks

Turron Davenport, FBGP Analyst

______

The spread offense has been a major part of college football and it is now becoming a featured scheme in the NFL. Because of that, numerous multi-threat players are getting more opportunities to display their ability to impact the game in many ways. The slot receiver has become a major weapon. The next prospect to be featured in our spotlight series is one of the best slot receivers in the country.
Pharoh Cooper has all of the traits of a slot receiver. He played running back, receiver and quarterback in high school. Head coach Steve Spurrier has taken advantage of Cooper’s versatility. Cooper can affect the game by taking a handoff in the backfield, working a defensive back from the slot position and by throwing the ball from the wildcat formation. He has a couple of passing touchdowns on his resume. He is a defensive coordinator’s nightmare. Let’s take a look at some of the things that make him such a big time playmaker.

Here you see Cooper taking a shovel pass and breaking off a nice gain:

His ability to tote the rock is on display here. Notice how he breaks three tackles on his way to what ends up being almost a 20 yard run. Cooper is built like a running back and carries the football like one also. Playing the slot requires the ability to make plays across the middle of the field. Sometimes there will be linebackers waiting to lay a big hit but when there is a running lane, a true playmaker will turn a short catch into a long gain.
The middle of the field is wide open. Cooper is matched up against a defensive back that he catches flatfooted. He releases off the ball slightly to the outside and makes a hard cut inside to create a huge window for the quarterback to deliver him the ball. The throw hits him in stride and Cooper is off to the races.
Slot receivers will also have to make plays outside of the numbers. Defending the slot position is one of the hardest things for a defensive back to do because there is ample space for the receiver to go inside or outside. The defensive back doesn’t have the privilege of using the sideline to his favor throughout the route against a receiver in the slot. Many think of slot guys as only making plays in the middle of the field. The better ones will make plays outside also.

Cooper battles through the contact from the corner and makes a diving catch that puts his team in scoring position. That is the kind of effort that will inspire a quarterback to throw the ball even when the receiver is covered because he trusts that his guy will make the play.

Here is another example of how Cooper shows that he can make plays on the perimeter.

Cooper again fights through contact when the corner tries to get his hands on him to slow him down. The quarterback places the ball perfectly into the end zone. Notice how he trusts his receiver to make a play. Again, that trust is earned. Cooper is able to track the ball and make the catch at the highest point. To top it off, he has the athleticism to get his foot down to complete the play.
In my opinion, Pharoh Cooper is the best slot receiver in the nation. He definitely has the chance to be a playmaker at the next level after his college career. Playing for a creative offensive mind like Steve Spurrier has given Cooper the chance to show how he can do it all on the offensive side of the ball. Just a side note, he also played some defensive back in high school. South Carolina actually recruited him as a DB but he was converted to receiver during his freshman year.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Miami Dolphins

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Dolphins have drafted extremely well over the last 3 seasons and have quietly assembled a very talented team.  They’ve been on the cusp of the playoffs the last 3 years as well.  By consistently adding talent to the roster, eventually they’ll kick the playoff door in.  This could be the year, so you can definitely understand the optimism.  I think them being strong on both sides on the line of scrimmage, in my opinion, feeds into that optimism.  This is a very talented squad.

Cause for Concern

Obviously the health of Branden Albert is one.  You want one of your premier players to be 100% and ready to go Week 1.  If he can’t, it’s not detrimental, but it does hurt.  Also, Ryan Tannehill has to do his part to help the offense grow.  That involves not sacking himself and being better situationally.  If those things don’t happen, they could find themselves once again hovering around the .500 mark.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Dolphins

1. Play UP to EVERY opponent – The last 3 seasons, the Dolphins have made a habit of playing up or down to the opponent.  That’s a big reason why they couldn’t close out games and win those ‘must-win’ games in order to get into the playoffs.

2. Defense ‘wants to’ stop the run – Remember, stopping the run is about attitude and ‘want to’.  Now that they’ve added NDamukong Suh amongst others, they have the attitude but is the ‘want to’ there.  If they can get better verses the run, they’ll be a Top 10 defense easily.

3. The Growth of Ryan Tannehill & Caleb Sturgis – Both guys have the ability to contribute points to the team and the last time I checked, you need points to win.  If both guys take the necessary strides to be on the plus side of that equation, the Dolphins could contend for the AFC East crown.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Buffalo Bills

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Bills landed a really good Head Coach in Rex Ryan. He inherits one of the best defenses in the NFL.  That’s a match made in heaven. You toss in the addition of a legit game breaker at RB in LeSean McCoy along with a very potent WR and TE group, and you can see why there’s optimism in Buffalo.  Lets not forget this team went 9-7 last year, so they are extremely talented.

Cause for Concern

Looking at Rex Ryan’s track record with how he manages the QB position, you have to wonder if he will stick with a guy for a full season or try to play multiple guys.  If he does the latter, then that’s a recipe for disaster.  The interior offensive line could potentially derail things if they can’t gel by Week 1.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Bills

1. Start EJ Manuel and stick with him for the full season – Trust me, he’ll get better every week

2. Continue playing Rex Ryan AND Buffalo Bills defense – It’s scary to think how good this defense will be under Ryan.

3. Close out and finish games – This is huge for any football team, but I felt as though Buffalo could’ve won 11 games last season if they were able to close out opponents.

4. Staying Balanced Offensively – The Bills have more than enough talent at the skill positions to cause problems for any defense.  McCoy is great…but don’t make yourself one-dimensional because of it.
