FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Philadelphia Eagles

Reason for Optimism

The Eagles are solid across the board and have one of the best special teams units in the NFL.  When you add a strong defensive front seven and a good running game, you’re going to win more games than most; which always leads to having optimism.

Cause for Concern

The quarterback position and interior offensive line are the biggest concerns because they go hand-in-hand with what the Eagles have to do to win.  Sam Bradford has to stay healthy and if the interior offensive line outside of Jason Kelce struggles, it could derail the growth of the offense.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles

1. Quarterback Position is Consistent – If Sam Bradford is able to stay upright for a full season, I have no doubting his passing ability and his ability to play well within Chip Kelly’s scheme.

2. Defense Doesn’t Get Fatigued – We’ve seen this over the last 2 seasons with this football team.  Because they play at a high tempo, they tend to wear down late in games.  Many times during the season, the Eagles would be in control of a game only to let it slip away due to defensive fatigued.  If that doesn’t happen this year, and they’re able to get key stops, they’ll go far.

3. Offensive Line Doesn’t Become a Liability – See #1

Reason for Optimism

The Giants offense has 2 of the most dynamic options at receiver in Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham.  When you toss in the stable play of Eli Manning and an improved offensive line, you can understand the optimism offensively because they’ll have the opportunity to outscore teams.

Cause for Concern

The Giants still don’t have that ‘it’ factor defensively.  Getting Landon Collins was a big time move and instantly helps out the secondary, which I think will be solid. But the major concern is with the defensive front 7.  There’s still a lot of question marks there.  I also don’t think the running game is as dependable as you would need it to be in order to survive if the pass game is having an off day.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New York Giants

1. Offense is Firing on All Cylinders – A healthy Victor Cruz with Beckham, Randle and Donnell at TE is very tough to defend.  If that offensive line, especially the offensive tackles, are able to not be a liability, this offense will make a lot of noise.

2. Defensive Ends Bring It – There’s no shortage of capable, talented pass rushers, the consistency has to be there from game to game.  If they’re able to apply pressure, whether Jason Pierre-Paul is in the lineup or not, then that’s all they need to get it done

3. Special Teams Become Special – The most underrated acquisition in the NFC was the signing of KR/PR Dwayne Harris.  The impact of field position is going to be huge for the Giants.  They’re solid and dependable in the kicking department; add in a dynamic returner and they can come out and win 2/3 facets of a game each week.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Dallas Cowboys

Reason for Optimism

The Cowboys are armed with the best offensive line and a ton of skilled weapons on the perimeter.  Tony Romo is coming off the best season of his career and the defense will get better as the season progress.  This time is hungry and wants to get the bitter taste out of their mouth from last year’s controversial playoff loss to Green Bay.  So with all things considered, you can see why optimism is high in Big D.

Cause for Concern

The running game is still a major concern for me.  The thought of ‘you can just put any back behind a good offensive line and be fine’ is furthest from the truth.  DcMarco Murray was a legit talent and the guys they have now or good players, but not the type you have to ‘game plan’ on stopping.  Plus they’re loaded with concerns being from health or consistency.  You also have to be concerned about playing without guys like Rolando McClain and Greg Hardy for a month.  If they can’t gel upon return, it’ll ultimately be a detriment to team success.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Dallas Cowboys

1. Withstand the First Month – Like I’ve mentioned before, if the Cowboys can hold it together defensively for the first 4 weeks of the season, as guys start to return from suspension and as rookies get acclimated in their roles, they’ll be dangerous from that point on.

2. Ground Game Gets It Together – Lets be honest, a lot of the success Dallas had last year offensively was due to the running of DeMarco Murray behind the best OL in the game.  If the collection of backs on the roster can do a fine job with the committee approach, ala the New England Patriots, then this offense won’t miss a beat.

3. Key Players Staying Healthy – I think the 2 guys that the Cowboys can’t do without this season are Tony Romo and Sean Lee.  if both guys are out there for 16 games, look out!

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: New York Jets

Reason for Optimism

The Jets should have one of the best defensive squads in the NFL. They’re armed with a very talented defensive line and ball-hawking secondary.  Offensively, new Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey and Geno Smith should mesh well together as the Jets finally have given Smith some really good options on the flanks.  So with a strong defensive team, an excellent defensive mind in Head Coach Todd Bowles, and a creative offensive mind in Gailey, you can understand the optimism coming out of Florham Park.

Cause for Concern

The Jets still have a weakness at Running Back.  I don’t feel as though there’s a ‘threat’ back there which could ultimately lead to a sputtering attack.  The right side of the offensive line could also be a concern if some of the same problems of 2014 start to resurface.  And the biggest issue defensively would be if the second level (Linebackers) are not able to consistently bring it from the outside and generate pressure.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New York Jets

1. Offense’s Flight Doesn’t Delay – If the Jets are having success offensively from the start of the season, that only bodes well for their chances of making the playoffs.  Their offense doesn’t have to be ‘great’, but it can’t be a detriment to team success.

2. Geno Smith’s Turnovers Disappear – If Geno Smith can cut his fumbles and interceptions in half, then the offense will be able to sustain drives a lot more in 2015.  Which ultimately means the defense can stay fresh and active throughout the course of a game and season.

3. The New York Sack Exchange Merges with The No-Fly Zone – In football, the front end has to help out the back end.  If the talented defensive line can create problems, get to the quarterback and force bad passes and the ball-hawking secondary does a great job of playing clean up, picking off passes in the process, then the Jets could lead the league in sacks and takeaways which could put them in the playoffs this year.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: New England Patriots

Reason for Optimism

The Pats are one of the most well-coached teams in the NFL.  They do a great job of game planning and scheming, both of which will keep you in and help you win a lot of games.  Also, they just so happen to have one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history in Tom Brady.  They’re a team that is used to playing with a constant shuffling of the deck, so even with the possibility of Brady missing a few games, they still have optimism.  Plus, defensively, they’ve improved their defensive line, which should help out the 2nd and 3rd levels.

Cause for Concern

If they can’t overcome the lack of depth at linebacker and at cornerback, things could get dicey for the Patriots.  Across the division, teams have the capability to go with 3 and 4 WR sets and be strong. Can they match up?

The Road to the Super Bowl for the New England Patriots

1. Garoppolo is Able to Keep the Ship Afloat – The Patriots drafted him for a reason.  They believe he’s the future and he’ll get a great test very early.  If he can go either .500 or 3-1 in the first 4 games, that’s huge.

2. Jerod Mayo Plays a Full Season – His availability means a lot for this defense. If he’s out there all 16 games, this could be a dangerous front 7.

3. Cornerback Play Steps Up to the Challenge – Losing both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner is a big blow.  If Logan Ryan & Malcolm Butler provide strong play along with one of many at Nickel, then the Pats could find themselves playing deep in January.

FBGP’s 2015 NFL Season Preview: Miami Dolphins

YouTube Preview Image

Reason for Optimism

The Dolphins have drafted extremely well over the last 3 seasons and have quietly assembled a very talented team.  They’ve been on the cusp of the playoffs the last 3 years as well.  By consistently adding talent to the roster, eventually they’ll kick the playoff door in.  This could be the year, so you can definitely understand the optimism.  I think them being strong on both sides on the line of scrimmage, in my opinion, feeds into that optimism.  This is a very talented squad.

Cause for Concern

Obviously the health of Branden Albert is one.  You want one of your premier players to be 100% and ready to go Week 1.  If he can’t, it’s not detrimental, but it does hurt.  Also, Ryan Tannehill has to do his part to help the offense grow.  That involves not sacking himself and being better situationally.  If those things don’t happen, they could find themselves once again hovering around the .500 mark.

The Road to the Super Bowl for the Dolphins

1. Play UP to EVERY opponent – The last 3 seasons, the Dolphins have made a habit of playing up or down to the opponent.  That’s a big reason why they couldn’t close out games and win those ‘must-win’ games in order to get into the playoffs.

2. Defense ‘wants to’ stop the run – Remember, stopping the run is about attitude and ‘want to’.  Now that they’ve added NDamukong Suh amongst others, they have the attitude but is the ‘want to’ there.  If they can get better verses the run, they’ll be a Top 10 defense easily.

3. The Growth of Ryan Tannehill & Caleb Sturgis – Both guys have the ability to contribute points to the team and the last time I checked, you need points to win.  If both guys take the necessary strides to be on the plus side of that equation, the Dolphins could contend for the AFC East crown.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is Due for a Contract Extension

Turron Davenport, FBGP Analyst

There are few players in the NFL that stir up as wide a range of evaluation as Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Words such as dynamic, polarizing and bust where thrown at Newton when he went through the NFL Draft evaluation process back in 2011. Then 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was one of the few that heaped a lot of praise on Newton, calling him “plutonium-grade raw material” and said he hasn’t seen a player with upside like Newton in probably the last 10 years. At the end of the day, Newton is a player with rare ability and is possibly one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill just signed a contract that will guarantee him $45 million over the next six years. He was the first of the 2012 quarterback draft class to sign a long term contract. Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck are all looking at contracts coming up as well.

Andy Dalton has signed a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals that gives him an average salary of $16 million. Colin Kaepernick’s contract is a series of team options over six years. Dalton, Kaepernick and Newton where all in the the 2011 draft class. All three have led their teams to the playoffs. As a matter of fact, the only quarterback in the 2011 and 2012 draft classes not to take his team to the playoffs is Tannehill.

Newton has waited the longest out of the young quarterbacks that have quickly made their mark on the NFL. Some may say that Cam Newton doesn’t fit the mold for the “face of a franchise.” That is not well founded. Newton is clean shaven, speaks well and has not been involved in any off the field foolishness since he’s been in the NFL.

As for his play, there are few that have the ability to do what he does. Newton can make any throw. He can deliver the ball to a receiver on a comeback route outside the numbers from the opposite hash with ease. He can perfectly drop the ball in a bucket with tremendous touch on nine routes and corner routes. The one area that Newton could work on is not delivering the ball high on deep in breaking routes.

That is where some of the accuracy issues come up when evaluating Newton. His mechanics in the pocket aren’t always the best but that is understandable given how poor of an offensive line the Panthers have had. Joel Corry, a former NFL agent and now salary cap analyst for CBSSports.com gave his take on what Newton has faced while he’s been in the NFL.

“Cam was drafted to the worst team in the league. They haven’t done him a whole lot of favors as far as weapons. They changed out the receivers and at this point, his only proven wide receiver is Kelvin Benjamin. He does have a really good tight end though.” Corry continued; “The offensive line after retirement of players like Jordan Gross isn’t what it should be. Michael Oher isn’t much of an upgrade at tackle. Cam masks a lot of deficiencies offensively.”

Notice how Corry said that Newton masks a lot of the Panthers deficiencies. Newton has been the ultimate dual threat. He has rushed for over 500 yards or more every year that he has played. He doesn’t only gains rushing yards by way of the read option. There are many times when the pocket collapses on him and he breaks a would-be sack before he runs for a big gain. The ability to make things happen when plays break down is very hard to game plan against. It is deflating when it happens on third downs.

Cam Newton led the Panthers to an NFC South Division title in the last two years. Granted, last year’s team won the division with a 7-9 record. The 2015 season is a contract year for Newton. He is set to make $14.6 million this season but the Panthers will be faced with a decision that should be an easy one for them. Football Game Plan spoke with salary cap analyst specifically about the Newton contract.

“Cam Newton has the same agent as Jay Cutler. Therefore, as a floor, the bare minimum that Newton will be signed for is nothing less than $18.1 million per year with $54 million guaranteed with a favorable structure to Cam.” Corry said. “If you take Tannehill’s contract into consideration, the average is almost $19.5 million which will set a new floor. Cam Newton at a bare minimum should be a $20 million per year quarterback.”

Corry also said that Newton would be unlikely to agree to a deal that is more than five additional years. This is because of the likelihood of Newton being able to sign another big veteran contract that would be lucrative provided that Cam continues to play at the level that he is playing now. Corry likened it to what Ben Roethlisberger did this year and what Phillip Rivers will do at some point in the near future.

“Cam may not want to give up more than five years. This would allow him to be in position to sign a third, big veteran contract which would be lucrative. Cam will only go out so long. He should come up for a new deal when he is around 33 years old.” Corry said.

Corry explained that they can place an exclusive franchise tag on Cam or they can put a non-exclusive contract on him. The non-exclusive tag would allow his agent to shop for offers and if a team is willing to give up two first round picks, they can sign him. Corry mentioned that the Cleveland Browns were willing to give up a first round pick for Sam Bradford who is injury prone and used that as evidence that a needy team would be likely to give up two firsts for Newton.

The exclusive rights tag would be the more likely of the two tag options for Newton if the Panthers can’t agree to a deal with him. Corry explained what the Panthers would be facing if they played the exclusive rights tag game with their young star quarterback.

“If you take the five highest 2016 cap numbers for quarterbacks, you come in around $25 million. Knowing that you would be likely to go exclusive franchise tag route, if they franchise Cam Newton for the next two years, they’ll be paying him $55 million over two years. They would be better served making him the highest paid player right now. The second franchise tag would be $30 million after the 2016 tag number.”

Cam Newton is the leader of the Carolina Panthers after doing some growing up over the last few seasons. Their team would not be able to contend without him. He brings value as a deadly passer and as an explosive runner. The Panthers may not have done the best job of surrounding him with talent but he has been successful regardless. It is time for the Panthers to give Newton the contract that he deserves.

It has already been established that the average for the top five quarterback contracts will be in the $25 million neighborhood. Newton’s floor would be $20 million. It is fair to put him at an average of $23 million which is just below the average for the top five quarterbacks. That being said, Newton’s deal will likely come in around five years, $115 million with $55 million guaranteed.
